Out-of-hours tyre call-outs in Wolverhampton
When a tyre fails in Wolverhampton, it tends to happen on the way in or out: on the ring road, the A449 dual carriageway up towards the M54, the A4123 heading for Dudley, or the A454 out to the M6 at junction 10. It might be the end of a late shift in Bilston, or a Sunday evening drive back to Tettenhall. We don't keep office hours. Ring at any time on any day, and the closest free fitter heads out with a replacement tyre and the kit to fit it at the roadside.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Where you are and the state of the traffic will affect that, and we'll be honest about timing when you call.
Where to wait on the M54, M6 and the dual carriageways
- On the M54 or the M6: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, as far over to the left as possible. Hazard lights on, then everybody out by the left-hand doors and up behind the barrier. Phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000 if you've stopped in an emergency area or you're stranded in a live lane. If leaving the car would put you in danger, stay put with the seatbelt fastened and hazards on, and dial 999. Our motorway flat tyre guide has the full steps.
- A449 towards the M54: this is dual carriageway all the way to junction 2. Slow down steadily and take a side road or lay-by; don't stop in lane one.
- The ring road: traffic islands come up quickly. Leave at the next exit and pull into a side street or a car park rather than stopping on the ring itself.
Bulges, splits and blowouts at speed
A hard knock on a pothole or a high kerb can break the cords inside a tyre without any immediate sign. Days later a bulge appears on the sidewall, and at speed on the A449 or the M54 that bulge can burst. If you notice a lump on the side of a tyre, or the steering starts to shake after an impact, don't push on to your destination. Stop somewhere safe and call us. A damaged sidewall can't be repaired, but a fitter can replace the tyre where you are before it fails at speed.
Low-profile tyres on larger alloys are especially prone to this kind of damage, because there's less rubber between the rim and the road. If your car runs on them, check the sidewalls after any hard hit.
The fix: a new tyre on the spot, or a repair where it's safe
Once the fitter has checked the damage, there are two outcomes. A small puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6 mm, on a tyre that hasn't been run flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance; our article on whether a tyre with a nail or screw can be repaired explains why. Otherwise we replace it with a premium, mid-range or budget tyre carrying the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing is free, and we dispose of the old tyre at no cost.
If the car is somewhere it can't safely be worked on, our breakdown recovery can move it first.
Before the fitter arrives: find the locking wheel nut key if your car uses one. It's usually in the glovebox or the boot tool kit, and the wheel can't come off without it.
What we'll need from you
- Your location: a postcode, the ring road exit you took, or the motorway junction and direction.
- The tyre size moulded on the sidewall, or your registration.
- What you noticed: a bang, a bulge, vibration or a warning light.
- Whether you're safely away from traffic.
