Fast roads need a different approach from a side street, so start by working out where you are:
- On the M40 or M25: pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, switch the hazard lights on, and leave the vehicle by the passenger-side doors. - On the A40 between the Swakeleys Roundabout and Denham: it's a busy dual carriageway. Keep going slowly to the next exit or a safe stopping place if you can, rather than halting in a running lane.
- In town: around the one-way system and the residential roads in Cowley and Ickenham, pull in clear of junctions, bus stops and driveways, and put the hazards on while you wait.
On-the-spot replacement and repairs
Most jobs finish with a new tyre fitted where you've stopped. If the tyre has picked up a small nail or screw in the middle of the tread and hasn't been driven on flat, it may be repaired to British Standard guidance instead. One thing to look for while you wait: the locking wheel nut key, if your car uses locking nuts. It tends to be in the glovebox or the spare wheel well, and the fitter will need it.
Shift workers, students and late finishes
With Hillingdon Hospital and Brunel University in town, plenty of people here drive at odd hours. A tyre that was slightly soft in the morning can be completely flat by the time a late shift ends, when garages are closed and the car park is nearly empty.
