Emergency tyre help around Preston
Preston sits where the M6 meets the M55, and a lot of traffic passes through on its way to Blackpool, the Lakes or Scotland. That makes it a common place for a tyre to give out: a blowout on the bypass, a flat discovered at a services car park, or a puncture in Fulwood on the school run. Call us at any hour. Our line is open 24 hours, seven days a week, and we send the nearest free mobile fitter carrying a tyre and the kit to fit it on the spot.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, though distance, time of day and motorway congestion all play a part. You'll get a straight answer on timing when you ring.
If the tyre goes on the M6 or M55
Motorway stops need the most care. Follow the Highway Code:
- Move onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, as far left as you can.
- Turn on the hazard warning lights, and sidelights too if it's dark or misty.
- Get out using the left-hand doors, taking passengers with you, and leave animals in the car.
- Wait behind the safety barrier, up the bank if there is one, well away from the carriageway.
- If you're in an emergency area, or the car stopped in a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000, or 999 if you are in danger. Then call us.
Don't attempt to change the wheel at the side of a motorway. Our guide to a flat tyre on the motorway goes into more detail.
On the A roads, in the city and out in the lanes
Off the motorway, the risks change. On the A6 through the city and on the A59 crossing the Ribble at Penwortham, traffic is heavy and quick; if the car still handles, slow down and turn off into a side road or car park rather than stopping in the lane. In the city's terraced streets around Deepdale and Ribbleton, pull in clear of junctions and bus stops. Heading north towards Goosnargh, the roads become unlit country lanes, so stop on a straight where approaching drivers have time to see you, and if there's a verge or field gateway, wait there rather than in the road.
How we put it right
When the fitter arrives they check the tyre and the wheel. A clean puncture in the central tread, from a nail or a screw, may be repairable following British Standard guidance if it hasn't been run flat. Sidewall cuts, bulges and shredded tyres need replacing, which we do where the car is, with premium, mid-range or budget tyres that carry the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free. If the car can't be worked on safely where it has stopped, we arrange breakdown recovery.
Wheel nut key: if the car has locking wheel nuts, find the key while you wait. It's often in the glovebox or the spare wheel well, and without it the fitter can't remove the wheel.
Holiday traffic and long journeys
Summer weekends bring queues of loaded cars down the M55 towards Blackpool and up the M6 to the Lake District. Extra weight, hot tarmac and pressures set for an empty car put tyres under strain, and a slow puncture that went unnoticed on a short run can fail after an hour at motorway speed. If you're setting off from Preston with a full boot, check pressures against the laden figures on the door pillar. If something does go wrong on the way, ring us before you try to limp on.
