Emergency tyre fitting across Plymouth
Plymouth has no motorway of its own. Instead the A38 Parkway carries traffic straight through the city, from Marsh Mills in the east to the Tamar Bridge in the west, and that is where many tyre problems show up. It might be a sudden blowout on the Parkway in the evening rush, a flat found outside a terraced house in Devonport before work, or a pressure warning on the way back from Dartmoor late on a Sunday. Whenever it is, phone us. We take calls round the clock, every day of the year, and send the closest available fitter with a replacement tyre.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. Distance, traffic and the hour all play a part, and we'll tell you honestly how long it should take when you ring.
Pulling over safely on the Parkway and beyond
A damaged tyre is a nuisance; standing in the wrong place is a real danger. Think first about where you've stopped:
- On the A38: the Parkway and the Devon Expressway towards Ivybridge are fast dual carriageways with traffic merging at every junction. If the car is still moving, slow down gradually and leave at the next slip road or pull into a lay-by. If you can't, stop as far left as possible, switch the hazards on, get everyone out by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. Call 999 if the car is stuck in a running lane.
- Crossing into Cornwall: if a tyre goes on the bridge approaches or near Saltash, keep rolling slowly to the first safe place to stop rather than halting on the crossing itself.
- On steep city streets: parts of Plymouth climb sharply from the waterfront. Park out of the way of buses, pull the handbrake hard, leave it in gear or park, and turn the front wheels towards the kerb.
Avoid driving on a flat tyre to reach somewhere more convenient. A few hundred yards can turn a repairable puncture into a write-off and bend the rim.
Repair, replacement or a tow
The fitter will look at the damage and tell you the options. A clean puncture in the middle section of the tread, under 6 mm across, can usually be repaired if the tyre hasn't been run flat. Anything near the shoulder, any sidewall cut and any tyre that has been driven on deflated gets replaced there and then. Where the car can't be worked on safely, for example on a narrow stretch with no verge, we can arrange breakdown recovery instead.
We carry premium, mid-range and budget brands with the manufacturer's guarantee, and wheel balancing and taking your old tyre away are free.
Run-flat tyres: if your car has them, it can keep going for a limited distance at reduced speed after a puncture, but the tyre usually has to be replaced rather than repaired. Our article on whether run-flat tyres can be repaired explains why.
Moorland roads, Cornwall runs and city kerbs
Drivers here split their miles between tight city streets and long, open roads. The A386 heads north out of the city towards Tavistock and the edge of Dartmoor, where roads are exposed and help can feel far away after dark. Others commute across the Tamar every day or head east along the Devon Expressway to Exeter. Tyres take a beating from potholes and kerbs in town and then get pushed hard at speed, which is why a slow puncture often gives out halfway through a longer trip.
Plymouth areas we come out to
We cover the whole city, including Devonport, Stoke, Crownhill, Plympton and Plymstock, and the main routes through them: the A38 Parkway, Marsh Mills, the A374 and the A386. We also reach the towns along the A38 and beyond, such as Totnes and Bodmin, and further east to Newton Abbot.
Information that speeds things up
- Exactly where you are: road, direction of travel, nearest junction, postcode or what3words.
- What has happened to the tyre and whether the car is still driveable.
- The tyre size from the sidewall, for instance 195/65 R15, or your registration.
- Whether your car has a locking wheel nut, and that you have the key.
