Peterlee was planned as a new town after the war, built on a plateau beside Castle Eden Dene to serve the mining villages around it. That shows in the roads. The A19 runs along the western edge, taking you north to Sunderland and south to Hartlepool. On the eastern side, the A1086 links Easington and Horden with Hartlepool, while the B1320 cuts through the middle of town between the two. A short way south-west, the A181 leaves the A19 at the Castle Eden and Wingate junction for Durham.

A tyre doesn't always fail through a puncture. Sometimes it simply wears out on one edge long before the rest of the tread. A common cause is wheel alignment knocked out of true, often by clipping a kerb, hitting a pothole hard or mounting a high verge to park.

Every month or so, turn the steering to full lock and look at the front tyres across their whole width. If the inner or outer edge is noticeably more worn than the middle, or the car pulls to one side on a straight road, get the alignment checked. Catching it early means you get the alignment sorted instead of replacing a pair of tyres. And if one edge is already down to the wear bars, we can fit new tyres where the car is parked.
