When only one tyre is damaged, the question is whether to replace just that one. The answer depends on the tyre on the other side of the same axle. Tyres on an axle should match in size, type and tread pattern, and ideally be close in wear, so the car brakes and handles evenly.

If the remaining tyre still has plenty of tread, a single matching replacement is usually fine. If it's well worn, replacing both together is often the better choice. Don't mix a summer tyre with an all-season one on the same axle, and if your car runs on run-flats, keep to run-flats. Many four-wheel-drive cars are fussier still about tread differences, so check the handbook. Tell the fitter what's on the car and they can bring the right match.
