Look Out for Uneven Wear
Speed humps, potholes and the occasional brush with a kerb while parallel parking can all knock a car's wheel alignment out. The car may still drive fine, but the tyres start wearing more on one edge than the other, and they reach the legal limit long before the middle of the tread looks worn.
Every few weeks, turn the steering to full lock and look at the front tyres across their whole width. A smooth band along the inner or outer shoulder, or a feathered feel when you run your hand across the tread, suggests the tracking needs checking. Other clues are a steering wheel that sits off-centre on a straight road, or a car that drifts to one side. Getting the alignment sorted at a garage protects the new tyres you've paid for.
