Stranded with a bad tyre in Derby

Derby runs on shifts. Factory and rail workers come and go at odd hours, the A38 carries traffic north and south right through the city, and the A52 Brian Clough Way and the A50 link it to the M1. That means a puncture is just as likely on the way to a night shift as on the school run. Call us whenever it happens. We pick up 24 hours a day, every day of the week, and send the nearest available fitter with a tyre to suit your car and everything needed to fit it at the roadside or on your drive.

Our aim is to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases. The roundabouts on the A38 can slow things down at peak times, so we'll give you an honest idea of timing when you ring.

Where to wait: the A38, the A52 and the M1

  • A38 through the city: this busy dual carriageway runs past the Kingsway, Markeaton and Little Eaton roundabouts. If a tyre goes, keep the car rolling slowly to the next slip road or a safe spot off the carriageway rather than stopping in a lane.
  • On the M1 at junctions 24 or 25: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area. Turn the hazards on, leave through the nearside doors and wait behind the barrier, well back from the traffic. In an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If the car stops in a live lane and you can't get out safely, stay buckled in with the hazards on and phone 999.
  • On the A52 or A50: fast traffic and narrow verges. Head for the next junction or lay-by and stand well away from the road once you're stopped.

What happens at the roadside

Our fitter checks the tyre first. Small punctures, under 6 mm and inside the central three-quarters of the tread, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance, provided the tyre hasn't been driven on flat. If the sidewall is cut, there's a bulge, or the tyre has been run on the rim, the fitter swaps it for a new one there and then. You can choose budget, mid-range or premium, all with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free.

If the car is in a spot where nobody can safely work on it, or the alloy is badly damaged, breakdown recovery can take it somewhere safer.

Before the fitter arrives: look for your locking wheel nut key. It's usually in the glovebox, the centre console or tucked beside the spare. If it's lost, tell us when you call.

Slow leaks that finally give out

A tyre can lose a little air for a week or two before it finally goes flat overnight on a drive in Chaddesden or Littleover. A slow puncture is easy to miss, especially if you top the tyre up at the garage and forget about it. If you've had to add air more than once recently, it's worth getting it looked at before it fails on the A38. Our guide to slow punctures covers the warning signs and causes.

Covering Derby and the roads around it

We come out to the city centre and districts including Allestree, Darley Abbey, Oakwood, Chaddesden, Spondon, Alvaston, Sinfin, Normanton, Littleover and Mickleover. On the road network, that's the A38 from Little Eaton down past Kingsway, the A52 east towards the M1, the A50, the A6 and the A61. Nearby towns with their own pages include Belper, Long Eaton and Burton upon Trent.

Questions we'll ask on the phone

  1. Where exactly are you? A street name, postcode, roundabout or junction number all help.
  2. What's wrong: a flat, a burst tyre, a bulge or a warning light?
  3. What size is the tyre? It's printed on the sidewall, or we can work from your registration.
  4. Are you parked safely away from the traffic?
