Driving in Brighton is mostly about hills, tight parking and a handful of busy main roads. The A23 comes down from London, passes Preston Park and finishes at the Old Steine where it meets the A259 coast road. The A27 bypass runs across the top of the city, and the A270 Lewes Road carries traffic out past Moulsecoomb. Away from those routes, many residential streets are steep, narrow and lined with parked cars on both sides.

Parking on a slope in Brighton usually means turning the wheels into the kerb, and squeezing into a gap between parked cars often means touching it. Each scrape is small, but a hard knock can damage the cords inside the sidewall. The tell-tale sign is a bulge or blister on the side of the tyre, and once it appears that tyre can fail without warning.

Every so often, crouch down and look along both sidewalls of each tyre, including the inner side if you can. Scuffs are normally cosmetic; bulges, cuts deep enough to show cord, or cracks near the rim are not. A damaged sidewall cannot be repaired, so if you spot one, get the tyre replaced rather than waiting for it to go on the bypass.
