A quick check: push a 20p coin into the main grooves at a few points around each tyre. If the outer band of the coin is visible, the tread is getting low and it's time to think about replacements. Do it in autumn, before the dark wet mornings arrive, and look along the sidewalls for cuts or bulges while you're down there. Worn fronts and good rears (or the other way round) are common, so check all four rather than just one.
