Swindon tyre emergencies, sorted where you are
Swindon's roads are built for speed. The M4 runs along the southern edge with junctions 15 and 16, the A419 dual carriageway sweeps up the east side past Commonhead and Blunsdon towards Cirencester, and the town is threaded with fast dual carriageways and roundabouts in between. When a tyre fails, there isn't much room to stop. It might be a blowout on the A419 at night, a flat found in a car park on one of the business estates, or a soft tyre on the drive in Haydon Wick before the school run. Call us whatever the time. We work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the nearest available fitter with a replacement tyre.
We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on where you are and the traffic. We'll give you a fair estimate when you ring.
Staying safe on the M4, the A419 and the town's dual carriageways
- On the M4: get onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area, turn on the hazard lights and get everyone out through the left-hand doors. Wait behind the barrier, as far from the traffic as possible, and don't attempt the wheel change yourself. If you're in an emergency area or a live lane, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000.
- On the A419 and A420: these carry fast traffic. If the car still moves, creep to the next slip road or lay-by. If you're forced to stop on the verge, switch on the hazards, get out away from the traffic and stand behind the barrier.
- On town roundabouts: don't stop on the roundabout itself. Exit at the first safe opportunity and pull into a side road, a lay-by or a car park.
Our motorway flat tyre guide explains in more detail what to do if it happens at speed.
What our fitter does on arrival
The usual result is a new tyre fitted where the car stands. If the damage is a small puncture in the central tread and the tyre wasn't driven while flat, a British Standard repair may be possible instead. If the car can't be worked on safely, for instance on a live lane or a slip road with no verge, we'll arrange breakdown recovery.
We carry budget, mid-range and premium tyres, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and taking the old tyre away are free.
Wheel lock key: if your car has locking nuts, check the glovebox, the door pockets and the spare wheel area for the key before the fitter turns up.
Pressure warnings on the way out of town
Many Swindon drivers commute along the M4 each day, and a pressure warning light that comes on near junction 15 or 16 is a hard call: carry on, or stop? If the car feels normal, leave at the next junction and check the tyres somewhere safe. If it pulls, vibrates or feels heavy, stop as soon as you safely can. Our guide to the tyre pressure warning light explains what it's telling you. Driving on with a deflating tyre at motorway speed builds up heat quickly, which can turn a slow puncture into a blowout.
The same goes for the A419 after the Commonhead flyover or the Blunsdon bypass, where the next exit can be a few minutes away. Keep to the left-hand lane at a steady, lower speed, use the next junction, and call us once you've stopped somewhere off the main carriageway.
