Rural roads take a beating over winter, and potholes on unlit stretches are easy to hit before you see them. A hard impact can crush the tyre against the rim and break the cords inside the sidewall. The tyre may still hold air, so it feels fine to carry on, but it has been weakened.

Once you're stopped somewhere safe, crouch down and look along the outer sidewall. A bubble or bulge, a split, or a dent in the edge of the wheel all mean the tyre should be replaced, not repaired, and it isn't safe for faster roads like the A4. A new vibration through the steering wheel or the car pulling to one side are other clues. Lowering your speed on broken surfaces and keeping pressures correct both reduce the chance of damage in the first place.
