Stranded with a flat in Stoke-on-Trent?

Stoke-on-Trent stretches a long way from north to south, and the A500 ties its six towns together. That means a tyre failure here might leave you on the dual carriageway between Hanley and Etruria, on the M6 near junction 15 or 16, on the A50 heading out towards Derby, or simply on a terraced street in Burslem. Day or night, weekday or bank holiday, phone us. We're answering round the clock, and the closest available fitter comes out with a replacement tyre and fits it where you've stopped.

In most cases we aim to get to you within 60 minutes, depending on location and traffic, and we'll give you a straight answer on timing when you ring.

Keeping safe on the A500 and the M6

  • M6 between junctions 13 and 15: this section is a smart motorway, and the old hard shoulder is now a running lane. If the car will still move, leave at the next exit or pull into an emergency area. Switch on the hazard lights, climb out through the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier, then call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stuck in a live lane and can't get out safely, keep your seatbelt on and the hazards flashing and dial 999.
  • Elsewhere on the M6: where there's a hard shoulder, use it, follow the same steps and stand well back up the verge. Our flat tyre on the motorway guide explains it in full.
  • A500 and A50: both are fast dual carriageways. Keep going slowly to the next slip road or lay-by rather than stopping in lane one, then wait on the verge side.

Out on the A53 towards Leek

Leaving the city for the Staffordshire Moorlands, the A53 climbs through open country with long unlit stretches and not many places to stop. A tyre that goes soft up there on a winter night is a lonely place to be. Pull into the first safe gateway or lay-by, keep the hazard lights on and wait well away from passing traffic, ideally behind a wall or fence. Give us any landmark you can see, or share a WhatsApp location pin, because a road number alone covers a lot of ground.

In winter, give yourself extra time and keep a torch, a warm coat and a charged phone in the car for exactly this situation.

What our fitter can do at the roadside

The fitter's first job is to inspect the tyre. If the puncture is under 6 mm and in the central three-quarters of the tread, and the tyre hasn't been driven flat, it can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. If not, a new tyre is fitted on the spot. We stock premium, mid-range and budget brands, each with the manufacturer's guarantee, and wheel balancing and disposal of the old tyre are both free.

Some spots aren't safe for roadside work, such as an emergency area on a smart motorway or a narrow moorland bend. When that's the case, breakdown recovery takes the car somewhere safer first.

Check for the locking nut key: if your alloys have a locking nut, the key is often in the glovebox or with the jack. The wheel won't come off without it.

A leak that keeps coming back

If you've been topping up the same tyre every few days, it will eventually let you down, usually on the A500 at the worst possible moment. Our guide to slow puncture signs shows what to look for. Get it checked while it can still be repaired, not after it's been driven flat.

The Potteries and beyond: where we come out

We cover Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton, plus Etruria, Trentham, Meir, Bucknall, Abbey Hulton, Smallthorne and Blurton. On the roads, that's the A500, A50, A53, A34 and A52 and the M6 around junctions 15 and 16. We also cover Newcastle-under-Lyme next door, Stone to the south and Leek up the A53.

When you ring, please tell us where you are, the size from the tyre sidewall or your registration, what happened, and whether everyone is out of harm's way.
