Staines-upon-Thames: a fitter sent out when a tyre fails

Few towns have as many busy roads meeting in one place. Junction 13 of the M25 is on the doorstep, the A30 bypass carries Heathrow and London traffic over the Thames, and the A308 follows the river towards Windsor and Sunbury. When a tyre bursts on one of those, or you return to a flat in a town-centre car park after an evening out, you need someone to come to you. That's what we do. Our line is open around the clock, seven days a week, and we send the nearest free fitter with a replacement tyre.

In most cases we aim to arrive within 60 minutes. The M25 and the A30 can slow that down at busy times, so we'll be straight with you about the likely wait.

On the M25 near junction 13

The orbital is about as busy as roads get, so the priority is getting yourself away from the traffic. If a tyre fails here:

  • Pull onto the hard shoulder, or into an emergency area if there is one ahead, and turn on the hazard lights.
  • Get out on the left, away from the lanes, taking passengers with you, and wait behind the safety barrier.
  • From an emergency area, phone National Highways on 0300 123 5000 so they can help you rejoin safely.
  • If you can't get out of a live lane, keep your seat belt on, leave the hazards on and call 999.

Leave the wheel alone until help arrives. Our flat tyre on the motorway guide has the full checklist.

The A30 bypass, Crooked Billet and Staines Bridge

The A30 Staines bypass is a dual carriageway, and the Crooked Billet roundabout, where it meets the A308 and the A3044, handles heavy traffic at peak times. Stopping on the bypass or on the bridge itself is dangerous. If you feel a tyre go, keep a firm grip, reduce speed steadily and turn off at the next junction into a side road or car park. On the river roads, find somewhere wide enough that passing cars aren't brushing your doors, and wait on the footpath. A tyre that's been driven flat for any distance can rarely be saved, so stop as soon as it's safe.

Late at night the bypass is quieter and traffic moves faster, which makes a blowout harder to handle and a stopped car harder for others to spot. Once you're off the main road, switch on your hazards and sidelights and, if you have a reflective vest or warning triangle, use them where it's safe to walk. On the bypass itself, don't put a triangle out at all.

Back on the road in one visit

The fitter inspects the tyre and tells you what they find. A puncture in the central ¾ of the tread, smaller than 6 mm, on a tyre that hasn't run flat can often be repaired following British Standard guidance; read more on whether a nail or screw puncture can be repaired. Damage elsewhere means a new tyre, fitted on the spot, in a premium, mid-range or budget brand with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and taking away the old tyre are free. If the car is stranded somewhere unsafe, our breakdown recovery can move it.

Towing a trailer or caravan? Mention it when you call, along with the trailer's tyre size. And whatever you're driving, have the locking wheel nut key ready, as the wheel can't be removed without it.
