Long Drives: Check Your Tread Depth
If you cover high mileage on the A1 and A19, tread wears faster than you might expect. The legal minimum for a car in the UK is 1.6 mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way round. Below about 3 mm, though, stopping distances in the wet get noticeably longer, which matters on fast, open roads where rain can sweep in quickly.
An easy check is the 20p test: slot the coin into the main grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread is getting low and it is time to plan new tyres. Check the inner edge too, since misaligned wheels can wear it down out of sight. Booking replacement tyres before they become illegal is far better than waiting for a failure.
