A34 Tip: Know What's in Your Boot Before You Need It
Lots of newer cars no longer carry a spare wheel. Instead there is an inflation kit under the boot floor, or the car runs on run-flat tyres. Many drivers only discover which they have when they are stuck in a lay-by on a dual carriageway with lorries going past.
Take five minutes at home to lift the boot floor and see. If there is a spare, check its pressure, because they are almost always neglected. If there is a sealant kit, look at the expiry date on the bottle; out-of-date sealant may not work. Bear in mind that sealant only copes with small holes in the tread, not a torn sidewall. And if you do have a flat at speed, pull as far left as you safely can, get everyone out on the verge side behind the barrier, and call for help from there.
