Plenty of cars in a university town spend long stretches unused, whether that's over the holidays, during exams or simply because the owner walks or cycles most days. Tyres lose a little air even when nothing is wrong, and a car that has stood for a month can be noticeably soft on one corner.
Before the first drive after a long break, walk round and look for a tyre that bulges more than the others, cracking in the sidewall, or a nail you hadn't spotted. Pump them up to the figures in the handbook or on the door pillar while they're cold. If one has gone completely flat, don't drive it to a garage, because rolling on a flat tyre wrecks the sidewall. Leave it where it is and let a fitter come to it.
