Sudden flat or blowout in Ilford?
Tyres pick their moment. For Ilford drivers that might be a bang on the North Circular as it drops towards the Redbridge roundabout, a hiss on Eastern Avenue near Gants Hill in the evening queue, or a tyre sagging on the kerb outside a terrace in Loxford when you're due at work. Phone us, day or night. We answer 24 hours a day, including weekends and bank holidays, and send whichever fitter is closest and free, with a tyre and the equipment to fit it at the roadside.
We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on where you are and how heavy the traffic is. We'll tell you honestly what to expect when you call.
Getting clear of the traffic
- On the A406 and the A12: these are fast, crowded roads with few places to pull in. Put the hazards on, slow down gradually and keep going to the next slip road, side street or service road if the car is still steering properly. If you're forced to stop, get out on the side away from the traffic and stand well back, behind a barrier if there is one.
- Heading onto the M11: if a tyre fails once you're on the motorway, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, hazard lights on, and leave by the left-hand doors to wait behind the barrier. Call National Highways on 0300 123 5000 if you're in an emergency area or stuck in a live lane, and don't try to change the wheel. Our guide to a flat on a motorway covers each step.
- On the High Road and Cranbrook Road: turn into a side street rather than stopping at a bus stop, a junction or the lights.
Replacing or repairing the tyre where you are
The usual result is a new tyre fitted where the car stands. If it's a nail or screw in the central part of the tread and you haven't driven on it flat, a repair to British Standard guidance may be possible instead; our article on whether a nail or screw can be repaired explains the limits. Where the car can't be worked on safely, or the wheel is damaged, we can arrange breakdown recovery.
We fit premium, mid-range and budget tyres, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and getting rid of the old tyre are free.
Flyovers, slip roads and the Redbridge roundabout
Around the north of Ilford, a lot of the road network is stacked. The North Circular crosses Eastern Avenue on a flyover at Redbridge, and slip roads feed in and out at speed. These are the worst possible places to stop: there's no verge, nowhere to stand and traffic coming up behind you fast. If a tyre goes on one of them, keep the car moving slowly with the hazards on until you're down at ground level and into a side road. Driving a short distance on a flat may cost you the tyre, but it's a much better trade than stopping in a blind spot.
Once you're safe, look at the car before you call. Note which tyre it is and whether the sidewall is torn or the tread is simply flat. It helps the fitter bring the right thing.
Locking wheel nut key: check for it now, usually in the glovebox or with the jack in the boot. Without it the wheel stays on, so let us know if it's missing.
