Emergency tyre help across Doncaster

Doncaster sits at a crossroads of motorways. The A1(M) passes to the west, the M18 curves round the east of the city and meets the A1(M) at the Wadworth interchange, and further north the M18 joins the M180 heading for Scunthorpe and the Humber. Junction 3 of the M18 feeds White Rose Way into the city, and junction 4 links to the A630. With that much through traffic, plus the A638 and the A18, there's always somebody somewhere around Doncaster dealing with a tyre that has just let go.

If it's you, ring us. We answer 24 hours a day, every day, and send the nearest fitter available with a new tyre and the equipment to fit it where the car is. We aim to be with you within 60 minutes in most cases. That depends on where you are, the time and the traffic, and we'll give you an honest idea when you call.

Getting out of harm's way first

  • A1(M), M18 and M180: pull onto the hard shoulder or into an emergency area and put the hazard lights on. Get out on the left, away from the traffic, and wait behind the barrier. In an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stranded in a live lane and can't safely leave the car, stay belted in with hazards on and phone 999.
  • White Rose Way and the A630: fast dual carriageways. Brake gently, indicate, and take the next exit or lay-by rather than stopping in a running lane.
  • Rural roads out towards Thorne and Hatfield: flat but often unlit, some with soft verges or ditches alongside. Stop on firm ground where you'll be seen, and stand well clear.

Our motorway flat tyre guide explains each step.

Repair or replace, right where you are

The fitter will check the damage before anything else. A nail or screw in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6 mm, in a tyre that hasn't been driven flat, can usually be repaired following British Standard guidance. If the tyre is beyond repair, they'll fit a new one there and then, choosing from premium, mid-range and budget brands, all with the manufacturer's guarantee. Balancing and disposal of the old tyre come free.

If the car can't be worked on safely where it's stopped, our breakdown recovery can move it.

Locking wheel nuts: find the key now if you can, usually in the glovebox or with the jack. Tell us if it's missing.

Your spare may not get you home

Lots of cars on the motorways round Doncaster are carrying a space-saver spare, a can of sealant or nothing at all. A space-saver is a temporary fix with its own speed limit, often 50mph, marked on the wheel, and it isn't meant for a long run down the A1(M) at motorway speed. Sealant can get you off a busy road, but it won't seal a large hole or sidewall damage, and the tyre will still need checking afterwards. It's worth knowing what's under your boot floor before you need it, and checking that the spare actually holds air. If you have a flat and aren't sure what you've got, stay put somewhere safe and let us bring a proper tyre to you.
