Island Driving, Mainland Help: Tyres Across Portsmouth
Most of Portsmouth is packed onto Portsea Island, and that shapes how people drive here. Rows of terraced houses in Southsea, Fratton and Milton leave little room to park, so cars sit nose to tail along the kerb. Getting on or off the island means using the M275, the A3 or the A27, and when one of those slows down, everything slows down.
Which is exactly why a flat tyre here is such a nuisance. Our fitters come out to wherever the car is, with the tyre and the tools, and do the work on the spot. Day or night, weekday or Sunday, the phone is answered and a fitter is sent.
We try to reach most Portsmouth addresses within 60 minutes, though traffic on the routes into the city can make that longer at busy times.
From Your Call to a Fitted Tyre
- You ring or message us. Say where the car is (a street name in Copnor or a car park in Cosham is plenty) and what has happened to the tyre.
- A fitter nearby takes the job. We have more than 100 mobile fitters across England and Wales, many with decades in the trade, so somebody near the city picks it up.
- The tyre is mended or swapped where you are. Balancing and disposal of the old tyre are free, and new tyres come with the manufacturer's guarantee.
- You pay once it's done. Cash, card or bank transfer, at a competitive price with no surprise charges added.
Parked in a narrow street with cars either side? Tell us when you call. As long as the fitter can get to the affected wheel and work safely, the job can normally be done right there, so you don't have to drive a flat tyre around the block looking for space. If the car is somewhere awkward, such as a slip road or a busy junction, we will talk you through getting to a safer place first if it can still be moved.
Services for Portsmouth Motorists and Traders
- Mobile tyre fitting: budget, mid-range or premium tyres put on outside your house in Eastney or at your workplace in Hilsea, without a trip off the island.
- Puncture repair: where the hole is small and sits in the main part of the tread, a repair is the sensible fix. If it isn't safe to repair, we fit a new tyre then and there.
- Van tyres: delivery and trade vans working the tight streets of the city can be back on the road quickly, without losing a whole round.
- Breakdown recovery: when the damage goes beyond the tyre, or the car has stopped somewhere it can't stay, we arrange to move it.
Wards, Suburbs and Routes We Reach
On the island we cover Southsea, Fratton, Milton, Eastney, Copnor, Baffins, Hilsea and the streets around them. On the mainland side, fitters go out to Cosham, Paulsgrove, Drayton and Farlington. We work along the M275, the A3 and the A27, and on the M27 where it meets the city.
Neighbouring towns are covered too: Havant to the east, Fareham at the top of the harbour, and Gosport across the water, which by road means going round through Fareham.
Tight Parking and Sidewall Damage
Squeezing into a gap on a terraced street usually means touching the kerb, sometimes harder than you meant. Do that often enough and the sidewall takes the punishment. Unlike the tread, the sidewall cannot be repaired.
Every so often, crouch down and look at the outer face of the kerb-side tyres. A bulge or bubble, a deep scuff, or a cut that shows cords underneath all mean the tyre's structure has been damaged, and it can fail without much warning, especially at speed on the M275. Don't wait for it to go flat: arrange a replacement. Parking a few centimetres further from the kerb, and turning the wheel less sharply as you pull in, saves a lot of tyres.
