How Low Can Your Tread Go?
The legal minimum for car tyres in the UK is 1.6 mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way round. Plenty of drivers only find out they are close to it at an MOT, but you can check in a minute at home.
Push a 20p coin into the main grooves. If the outer band of the coin disappears, you still have some depth to spare. If you can see that band, the tyre is near the limit and worth replacing soon, because grip in the wet falls off well before the legal line. Check a few points around each tyre, since wear is often uneven, especially on the inside edge where it is hard to see.
