Emergency tyre help across Guildford, day or night
A tyre that fails around Guildford is often on a road where stopping feels exposed: the A3 bypass squeezed through the valley, the A31 up on the Hog's Back, or a dark lane out towards Shalford or Compton. Just as often it's quieter than that, a flat noticed in Burpham before the commute or a puncture on a student's car near Park Barn late on a Saturday. Whenever it happens, phone us. We answer 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and send the closest available mobile fitter with a new tyre and the tools to fit it where you've stopped.
We aim to reach you within 60 minutes in most cases, depending on where the car is and how the A3 is moving. You'll get a realistic time from us on the phone, not a guess.
If it happens on the A3 or the Hog's Back
Both the A3 through Guildford and the A31 along the Hog's Back are fast dual carriageways, and in places there is very little room at the side to pull over. A sudden deflation at 60 or 70 mph needs calm handling:
- Hold the wheel firmly and lift off the accelerator. Brake gently once the car is under control, rather than stamping on the pedal.
- Head for the next slip road or lay-by at low speed if the car will get there. A short, slow run on a flat is better than stopping in lane 1 of the A3.
- If you have to stop on the edge, put the hazards on, get everyone out on the side away from traffic and wait behind the barrier or well back up the bank.
- On the M25 near junction 10 at Wisley, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, leave by the left-hand doors and stand behind the barrier. In an emergency area, ring National Highways on 0300 123 5000. If you're stuck in a live lane, stay belted in with hazards on and call 999.
More on this in our article on what to do with a flat on a motorway, much of which applies to fast A roads too.
Steep streets, the gyratory and town parking
In town, the risks are different. If a tyre goes on the gyratory or one of the busy approach roads, don't stop on the one-way system itself; turn into the first side street or car park you reach. On a slope, such as the streets climbing towards the cathedral or up from the river, stop where you're not blocking traffic, apply the handbrake hard, leave the car in gear or in park, and turn the front wheels into the kerb. Then wait on the pavement, not in the road.
Repair, replace or recover
Our fitter looks at the damage before deciding anything. A small puncture in the central three-quarters of the tread, under 6 mm, is usually repairable to British Standard guidance, as long as the tyre hasn't been driven on while flat. Anything else, including a split sidewall or a blowout, means a new tyre fitted at the roadside. You can choose premium, mid-range or budget, each with the manufacturer's guarantee, and balancing plus disposal of the old tyre cost nothing extra. Where the car can't be worked on safely, for example on a narrow stretch of the A3, we can arrange breakdown recovery to a safer spot.
No spare and no key? Many newer cars carry only an inflator kit. If yours has locking wheel nuts, look for the key in the glovebox, door pocket or spare wheel well while you wait, because the wheel won't come off without it.
Districts, villages and routes in our Guildford area
We cover the town centre, Merrow, Burpham, Stoughton, Westborough, Onslow Village, Park Barn, Bellfields and Jacob's Well, plus the University of Surrey and Surrey Research Park. Out of town we reach Shalford, Compton, Worplesdon and the villages along the A25 and A246. On the main roads we attend the A3 between the A31 junction and Wisley, the A31 Hog's Back, the A322 and the A281. Close by, we also have pages for Aldershot, Camberley and Addlestone.
Information that speeds things up
- Your location: road, direction of travel and the last junction or landmark you passed, or a dropped pin.
- The tyre size from the sidewall, for example 225/40 R18, or your registration.
- What you noticed: a bang, vibration, a pull to one side or the warning light.
- Whether you're off the carriageway and safe to wait.
