Flat or blowout around York? Phone us now

York has no motorway of its own, but its ring road does the same job. The A64 bypass curves round the south and east carrying traffic between Leeds and the coast, and the A1237 completes the loop to the north and west, meeting the A19 and the A59 on the way. Those roads are where many York tyres give up, along with the narrow streets inside the city and the country roads out to the villages. If you've just felt a thump and heard the flapping, or come back to the car in Acomb to find it sitting on the rim, we can help.

Our line is staffed 24 hours a day, every day, so a late-evening or Sunday call is no problem. We send the nearest fitter available with a tyre and the kit to fit it where you are. We aim to arrive within 60 minutes in most cases; distance, traffic and time of day affect that, and we'll be straight with you about it.

Staying safe on the bypass and the ring road

  • A64 bypass: this is a fast dual carriageway, so don't stop in the running lane if you can avoid it. Slow down steadily, indicate, and aim for the next lay-by or junction. Once stopped, put the hazards on and get everyone out on the verge side, well back from passing traffic.
  • A1237 and its roundabouts: traffic here is heavy at peak times. Turn off at the next roundabout into a side road or a car park rather than pulling over on the ring road itself.
  • Villages and unlit roads: pick a straight stretch where drivers can see you from a distance, ideally with a gateway or wide verge, and wait away from the car with a torch or phone light.
  • If you're heading for the motorway: on the A1(M) or M62, use the hard shoulder or an emergency area, leave by the left-hand doors and wait behind the barrier. From an emergency area, call National Highways on 0300 123 5000. Our motorway flat tyre guide explains more.

What our fitter can do once they reach you

A screw or nail in the middle of the tread, under 6 mm, on a tyre that hasn't been driven flat can normally be repaired, following British Standard guidance. If the damage is to the sidewall, too close to the edge or too big, the fitter will put on a new tyre straight away, in a premium, mid-range or budget brand with the manufacturer's guarantee. Wheel balancing and taking the old tyre away are free.

Where the car can't safely be jacked up, such as on a narrow verge beside the bypass, we can organise breakdown recovery to move it first.

Locking wheel nuts: if your wheels have them, mention it when you ring and say whether you've found the key.

Loaded up for the coast

On summer weekends the A64 fills with cars heading for Scarborough and the coast, many of them packed to the roof or towing a caravan or trailer. Extra weight with tyres at their everyday pressures makes the sidewalls flex and heat up, and that's how a tyre that was fine around town can fail at speed on the bypass. Before a loaded trip, set the pressures to the higher figure in your handbook or on the door-pillar sticker, and check the trailer or caravan tyres too. If the pressure warning light comes on mid-journey, take it seriously; our page on the tyre pressure warning light explains why.

Areas of York we come out to

We attend the whole city and its edges: Clifton, Heworth, Tang Hall, Osbaldwick, Dringhouses, Holgate, Fulford, Huntington and Haxby, as well as villages just off the ring road. On the main roads we cover the A64 bypass, the A1237, the A19, the A59, the A1079 and the A166. Nearby places with their own pages include Selby, Knaresborough and Wetherby.

Details that help us find you fast

  1. Where you are: the road, the nearest roundabout or junction, a village name or a what3words reference.
  2. Which way you were heading on the A64 or the ring road.
  3. What has happened to the tyre: flat, blown out, bulging or a warning light.
  4. The size on the sidewall, or your registration.
